prenatal classes online
In this post, I’ll walk you through why to consider prenatal classes online, what types to look for, what to require to enroll, and I’ll provide some tips on good online cildbirth courses.

Now a bit about my own story…

  • When I was pregnant the first time, I had a miscarriage so early that I didn’t have time to even start thinking about prenatal classes.
  • The second time, I went into preterm labor already in week 25, was ordered bed rest for almost three months and could not attend a prenatal class because I was literally not allowed to leave my home. It didn’t occur to me that there might actually online prenatal classes I could attend. But there are and more of them every day!
  • The third time was finally a (relatively) normal pregnancy. I was under surveillance and sick leave, but I was doing pretty well. This time, I went to a prenatal class. It was a couple’s class with birthing information, breathing and relaxation techniques and also teaching the partner how to support the mom-to-be. It was great! Especially doing it together!

During the actual birth (which was very quick, and very intense and painful), me and my husband were so close to each other, that we were actually even joking while I dilated the last inch. Our midwife was puzzled and touched and told us that she had never seen anything like us before. She even decorated a blanket for our newborn and sent to us a gift afterward telling us she was so touched by being part of our birthing experience.

I truly believe that preparing is key and preparing together if possible! Preparation does take away some of the worrying, and not being frightened at all despite the pain is a key to having a good birthing experience. There are no guarantees, of course. But preparation for such a very odd situation as giving birth is so important.

Prenatal Classes Online – What to Look For

When I joke with my kids, I sometimes tell them to leave the virtual world and enter the “meat world”; i.e. where people actually are. Flesh and blood. An online prenatal course can, obviously not, give you that. It won’t let you test the laughing gas, hug the midwife, or sit on the hospital bed. But it can (and should) give you some other essential things:

  • Easy to digest, pedagogic information to prepare for birth. (This should go without saying, but I have seen classes that lack here!
  • Different ways to digest the information – like e-books, web pages, video, online tests, emails, material that can be downloaded. All materials should be viewable on mobile!
  • Taking advantage of the online setting, there should be a way to connect with other parents to be over social media if relevant! It depends on what type, of course, you are taking.
  • Personal help over email, phone, chat or social media, especially for comprehensive classes, teaching the whole process of childbirth
  • Held by someone who actually knows the topic and is a trained yoga teacher, midwife, or whatever is relevant for the course.

Types of Online Birth Classes

There are in general two different types of prenatal online classes:

  • Comprehensive learn-it-all childbirth classes, preparing you by helping you understand everything about giving birth. These classes often also provide workbooks, templates for birthing plans, a community, and more.
  • Prenatal classes focusing on body and mind preparation. These are often video-based and teach breathing, relaxation, yoga to strengthen and open your body for childbirth, massage techniques, and similar. Since these classes have a more limited (but still very important!) scope, they often do not provide communities, workbooks, and so on.

Recommended Prenatal Online Classes

Here are four prenatal classes that are of high quality. Two are comprehensive, but with a little bit different focus, and two provide techniques for preparing your body, mind, and relaxation tools during childbirth.

So I’d say you do not need both of the top two classes, but you could easily choose one of them and combine with one or both of the bottom two classes, which focus on the body, mind, and relaxation techniques.

Important to know – they all offer a money-back guarantee,  so you can check them out and decide if they suit your needs.

Another important thing – They are all taught by established midwives, doulas, birth nurses, and yoga teachers. They are ready to help you!

Here are the classes!

Hilary’s Online Prenatal Class for Couples

prenatal class for couples

This is actually the first online prenatal class I ever found focuses specifically on couples. Kind of odd that I haven’t seen it before, because, of course, this is how a childbirth class should be taken (if there are two of you expecting the baby together.) The creator of the course, Hilary, is a birth nurse, so she knows what she is talking about.

In addition to walking you through the birth process, she gives down-to-earth answers to questions you might be thinking about but not feel like asking anyone – like will I poop while giving birth, what contractions are like, c-section info, procedures after birth, and a lot more.

I highly recommend Hilary’s online childbirth class. If you only have a little bit of money to spend, you can choose her Basic Edition, which contains an ebook with plenty of knowledge to prepare for childbirth. In her other packages, she also offers video material and a private Facebook group, which is fantastic because you can reach out to her personally to ask questions on growing your pregnancy and birth preparations!

Package Prices

  • $35 The Fundamentals
  • $99 The Online Course
  • $149 The Delux Course

Being an online type of person, I prefer the online course available in options 2 and 3. I like the videos there too. But if this course is too expensive for you, I think the Fundamentals version is very good value for the money!

I am not quite as convinced of the Online Course version as compared to the Delux version, even if the information and tips provided are great. I just like the idea of connecting with others, a workbook for the couple, and the possibility to get personal help so much that I think they are worth paying for.

I can strongly recommend the course! I took the Deluxe version and think it is great. But that version also contains everything in the basic version, so I know that that material is good too! :-)

Hilary does run campaigns from time to time, providing discounts or adding in bonuses. Check out her current pricing here.

Those are my top recommendations for prenatal classes online

You don’t need all these classes, of course. The two top ones provide a full childbirth education with a little bit of different focuses. The next two classes are both yoga and technique classes.

So a recap:

I really, really wish you good luck with your pregnancy!
