Why Wont My 13week Old Stop Crying?

by anna

Hi,
The last two days my 13 week old baby has been irratable and won't stop crying. I haven't had a minute to myself, he only seems to be settled if hes laid on me while I pat his back but even then it doesnt always work! I have tried everything that normally calms him but only lasts a short while. He hasn't got a temperature and I haven't changed his diet in any way, but he's had two runny poos and is constantly suckin his hands n his sleves are always drenched. Is it to early for him to be teething? I felt his gums while he chomped on my hand could feel were his teeth wil be but no sign off them coming through! please help

Three possible reasons...
by: Paula (Baby Help Line)

Hi Anna,

You must be exhausted, and your son too. I can think of a few reasons why he is crying.

The first one is actually hunger. Sucking on his hands is a sign of hunger for infants. Have you tried increasing the amount of breast milk or formula he gets? If you breastfeed, then you need to feed him more frequesntly for a while to increase your milk production. Every second hour for a day will usually do the trick. This young babies oftre have growth spurts when they are very fussy, very hungry and then after a frew days (and increased amoutns of food) it slows down again. Only to increase after a couple of weeks again.

The second possibility is teething. I agree with you that it is quite early, but not impossible. You should be able to feel the little teeth within days in such case.

Third, he could be sick or on his way to get sick, even if he doesn't have a temperature yet. In such case, just observe him and see what the problem is. And cuddle him a lot. Babies can get diarrhea from having a cold.

Try to take turn with your partner if you have one. It is quite exhausting when a baby is so miserable. Also, do you have a sling or baby carrier? They can be of great help.

And remember that it will pass soon. Your little son really needs your love, comfort and patience.

Good luck,

Paula
