Which To Remove First Pacifier Or Rocking?

by Helen
(Canada)

I have a 5 month old baby and she is used to me rocking her to sleep and using a pacifier to fall asleep, as well as, to get back to sleep. She usually spits out the pacifier when she falls into a deep sleep, but wakes up and wants it put back in to fall asleep, which at nap time she usually doesn't because she is so wakes up looking for it.

I want to help her learn to fall asleep on her own, but I am not sure if I should work on removing the pacifier and rocking her to sleep first or having her fall asleep in her crib without rocking but with the pacifier. I want to get rid of both props, but think doing both at once will be too hard for her. Any recommendations?

Pacifier or rocking....
by: Baby Help Line (Paula)

Hi Helen,

I can totally relate to your wish for your daughter to be able to sleep independent of you. Just remember babies are babies and for most, it takes several years until they stop waking up at night wanting to share your bed. It is just natural for them to want to be close to their parents.

That said, I agree that it can be nice if a baby can fall asleep without having to be rocked and also without the pacifier. I think for me personally, I would target the rocking first. That is mostly because I imagine it very tiresome ate night to sit up and rock a little baby back to sleep.

But on the other hand, if you only have to rock her once at bedtime, then maybe it is smarter to start with the pacifier, because then you can hold her, rock her and still comfort her even without the pacifier.

So I guess my answer is - get rid if the one making you the most tired and disturbed at night!

Warm wishes,

Paula

How to get rid of the pacifier
by: Paula (Baby Help Line)

Here is a long thread dealing with how to help a baby quit using a pacifier and fall asleep without it.

As you can see, you are not the only one having a baby who needs help with falling asleep.

Warm wishes,

Paula
