What Formula For Gassy Infant Spitting Up

by Misty
(Louisiana)

My child is 2mths old and we have had spitting up problems since he was born.

I have changed his formula from gentle ease to prosobee because he was spitting up a lot and being very constipated.

The dr first told me to put cereal in is bottles which made the constipation worse and he was still spitting up just about the whole bottle.

So he put him on acid reflux med and we changed to prosobee soy milk. He did ok for the first two weeks then everything started going down hill!!

We are back on rice cereal with the soy milk he is not constipated but he is still projectile spitting up and having a lot of very bad tummy aches (gas) and really fussy right after he eats.

I was wondering if I should try a hypoallergenic formula??

Yes try it!

Hi Misty,

What a tough start for your little boy (and his mom and dad...) I think it is great that you have contact with a pediatrician and try to solve the issues.

Since he is not constipated with the soy milk, that's a great improvement.

You say that he still has a lot of gas. Actually there was a research study back in 1995 investigating the correlation between type of formula and baby's gassiness. There turned out to be almost no connection! Parents are very prone to blame the formula for the gas, but there really wasn't much connection at all.

Almost all babies suffer from some degree of gas and tummy pain during their first months of living.

Still, as a mom I would definitely do what you suggest; discuss trying hypoallergenic formula with his Dr. You may also want to discuss medication for reflux in case his weight gain is poor. If he is a happy boy and does gain weight, he might just have reflux that isn't too severe and you will be asked by the doctors to simply endure until he grows out it, and continue with all the feeding precaution that you probably already use, such as feeding him small portions in an upright position, burp him half way through, try an "airless" bottle and elevate the head end of his bed slightly.

But certainly discuss the hypoallergenic formula!

Also, to help him release some gas, have you tried baby massage? It helped one of my kids a lot at around the age of 2 months.

I hope this gave you some ideas!

Enjoy your little son, soon enough he will be eating burgers and playing PC games... ;-)

have baby checked for pyloric stenosis...
by: Anonymous

My now 6-year-old son had issues with projectile vomiting right around two months of age. It turned out he had something called a pyloric stenosis--a thickening of the muscle at the bottom of the stomach which didn't allow the contents of his stomach to pass through to the intestine. Essentially, it is a blockage which needs to be repaired with surgery. It turns out it is somewhat common, and happens to first born males. The surgery is minor and can be done laproscopically, and only requires an overnight hospital stay. My six-year-old thrived afterwards, and has no issues since then. Diagnosis usually comes with drinking a small amount of fluid (pedialyte), and performing an ultrasound to see what is happening with the fluid.

Infant Wedge Worked for us
by: Anonymous

Hello,

I know this comment is now late, but thought it might help others searching for some help. My boy is now 2.5 months, and was projectile vomitting, but after an ultrasound we determined it was just acid reflux. We now have him on medication as well, but what has really helped us is keeping him upright for at least a half hour after feeding him (which can be hard at night!), and also we ordered a medical grade sleeping/tummy time wedge. It was expensive, but well worth it. It is on the following website under infant reflux positioners:
