Urination Gone For Sick Baby

by joan
(Philippines)

My baby is 5 months old and pure breastfeed. She has a cough right now. She's under medication for 3 days. Her medicines are erythromycin and ambroxol. I've noticed yesterday until early today that her diaper doesn't get wet. She doesn't urinate. I got worried? What should I do?

Baby not urinating
by: Baby Help Line - Annie

Hi Joan,

You are right to be concerned, I think it would be a good idea to take your baby back to the doctor. Babies can dehydrate quite quickly when it is hot, or if they have a temperature. Breast fed babies can go days without pooping without any concern, but she should be urinating. That is her body's way of getting rid of the bugs from being sick.

You can increase her liquids, try boiled water in addition to breast feeding. It may be she is not feeding so well with her illness so is not getting as much fluid. Plus she needs more fluids anyway if she is unwell. If she won't take a bottle try water on a teaspoon, or in a sippy cup, or even sucking on a cloth you have boiled and then dipped in luke warm boiled water.

I would also take her temperature, and if it is up then use baby paracetamol, or equivalent to get it down.

However, definitely get her checked out with your doctor again.

All the best, I hope she back to her lovely healthy self again soon,
Annie Desantis
