Urinating Hurts

by Mireille Comeau
(Bathurst, New Brunswick)

My baby is a boy, he is 10 months old. While he pees he cries like crazy! His pee is hot, not warm, but hot!

Could this be an infection? What should I do about it?

Yes, possible infection
by: Baby Help Line

Hi Mireille,

Have you checked your boy's temperature? If the urine is hot, it could be because he has a fever.

And fever and pain are two possible signs of a urinary tract infection.

I think you should definitely take him to a doctor to have him checked.

Good luck!

Sceaming son
by: Paula (Baby Help Line)

David,

Your son might have a small wound or infection in the opening of the urethra. I don't know if it is possible for you to examine him carefully and see if he seem to be red at the tip of his penis. It could of course also be a urinary tract infection (UTI), although that is not so common for boys. But since a UTI can cause kidney damage if left untreated, definitely go see a doctor to rule it out. Also, a doctor can provide a antibiotic ointment, if there is smaller infection going on. While waiting for your appointment, try to let your son run around without diapers as much as possible, give him a lot to drink and try putting him in bath with baking soda. (About 1/2 cup for a bigger baby bath tub.) If he's got some kind of fungus or rash, the baking soda will help clear it.

Hope this helps,

Paula

Yvonne: Check your son for infections
by: Paula (Easy Baby Life)

Hi Yvonne,

Your son's situation is not likely to be very serious, but he is in pain and there is a discharge. It could be a urinary tract infection or some other infection. Have him checked immediately. Urinary tract infections are easily treated with antibiotics, but can travel up towards the kidneys if left untreated. (And then it can become serious.)

Also check your baby's diaper area and his penis for any redness or signs of infection.

Let us know about your progress,

Paula
