Twins With Cold

by Kathy
(Fairfield, CA)

Hi, my one year old twins both have runny noses and coughing a little. No fever, so that's good. Can I give them anything to help them sleep better. I have the humidifier in the room already. Is it okay to give them 0.4ml of children cold medicine? Is there anything for babies other than Tylenol? We have ruled out ear infections. They are also teething like mad!

Twins with a Cold

Colds, or upper respiratory infections (URI) are one of the most common and contagious reasons of illness in infants and young children. They are caused by viral infections and do not need treatment with antibiotics. They usually last 7-14 days.

If your child has a stopped up nose, you may want to use saline nose drops. You can make these by adding ½ teaspoon of table salt to 1 cup of boiled water. After the solution has come to room temperature, put one drop in each nostril then suck with the 1 ounce rubber syringe (suction bulb). Do this before each feeding and at bed time. This will make it easier for the child to breathe. There are many over-the-counter cold medications and remedies. Generally, they are not necessary. If your child feels badly, you may want to try a decongestant. However, they do not eliminate all symptoms, but may decrease the severity while your child fights the infection himself. Cough medicine is usually not recommended as coughing is helpful and should not be eliminated.

COLDS--COMPLICATIONS
As discussed above, the vast majority of colds are benign and will go away without any difficulties. If your child develops a fever several days after he or she has a cold, they will probably need to be checked by the doctor. Tylenol is not recommend until one year of age. But some pediatrician?s allow it to be given at 6 months of age, check with your doctor. Orajel can be rubbed on the gums for teething. There are also teething tablets that can be given to help with the symptoms of teething. They dissolve in their mouths quickly. They are sold at Wal-Mart, CVS, and other drug stores. Hope your babies feel better soon.
