Trouble Feeding Daughter Fruits And Veggies

by Rob Shoyer
(iowa)

My daughter is just about 8 months old, and has been eating veggie and fruits (gerber) for a while now, this was always enjoyable for her and us. She would smile and was always ready for the next spoonful.

But lately after about 3 or 4 bites she gets fussy and cries, she still eats but it is slow and frustrating. The only thing that has been different since she has started crying during this time is that a second tooth has come in. I should also say that we have a veggie and a fruit, then follow with a 5oz bottle of formula. ( The bottle she still enjoys )

What could be causing the fussiness and crying during this time?

A few reasons and tricks
by: Paula (Baby Help Line)

Hi Rob,

As you mention, your daughter may be teething. But even if she isn't, it is quite common that babies go through stages of being more picky. Actually at some point after 6 months, many babies simply refuse new tastes completely. Many parents find this worrying, but at this early age (even 8 months old, solid food are to a large extent meant to be a fun and slow project aimed at gradually learning to eat the same food as the reast of the family. So do whatever you can to avoid power struggles.

At this age our youngest child refused any food but banana and porrige. So I intruduced other tastes very slowly by mixing other fruits or veggies with banana or porrige. It worked. Some times :-) They are smart too, those little fellows.

Try not to put pressure on your daughter to eat.If she eats 2 spoons happily and then doen's want more, just let it be. She will want more over time. If youare worried about the amount of food she eats, then add in another meal; like an extra fruit snack or even some extra formula.

You can also see if she is starting to become interested in feeding herself. Either by sticking her fingers in the purée and lick them or be offering finger foods, that you feel she would be able to handle.

You have a greasy, but fun period a head if you just let her take her time ad don't worry about it.

Good luck,

Paula
