Stress and Pregnancy

by Nicci
(Nottingham)

Hi! I'm 8 weeks pregnant with my 1st baby and today I had a really stressful incident at work!!

Basically I'm an estate agent and 1 of my customers really upset me shouting and swearing at me until he reduced me to tears -mainly because I felt a weird feeling in my tummy-like butterflies and I went all light headed.

I was so worried. I went to the local hospital and they checked me over - ie took my blood pressure and temperature and basically said just to go home and rest! I'm soo worried I don't want anything to happen to my baby!!

Just wondered if anyone else had any similar experiences.xx

Hi Nicci!

I completely understand that you're worried! To feel like you do is normal and very much part of being pregnant. But I think I might be able to help you just by stating some hard facts.

Some recent research does indicate a connection between extreme stress and early miscarriage. However, this is only during the first three weeks of pregnancy, during implantation of the egg in the lining of the uterus. The theory is that the stress hormones somehow inhibits this implantation process.

After this very sensitive period, during which the major part of the early miscarriages actually occur, one has not found any correlation between stress and miscarriage as far as I know.

So, my guess is that you don't have to worry over this particular incidence! You are soon past the first twelve weeks and after that the risk for miscarriage really is reduced.

So hang in there!. Sooner than you know, you'll have a cute baby belly and you'll start feeling small kicks...

Congratulations on your pregnancy! And when the time comes, check out our section about giving birth.
