Solid Mucus Bowel Movements

by Ashley
(Ontario)

My 9 month old girl, who is breastfed, has hard big bowel movements with thick mucus coated around the feces. I was just wondering if I should be worried? Or take her to the Dr.? She's been eating food for a while now, but it's mostly fruit, veggies and oatmeal. I'm afraid to give her meat if she's not digesting her food properly.

Maybe constipated
by: Paula (Baby Help Line)

Hi Ashley,

It does sound as if your daughter is a bit constipated. Does she show any signs of discomfort while pooping? Does she go every day or irregularly?

The fact that her poop is big and with mucus doesn't have to be a problem; mucus is actually normal to certain degrees and a way for the body to protect the intestines. But if the poop is very hard, irregular or painful, then it certainly an idea to try to do something about it.

Have you tried giving her fruits that soften her poop, such as prune, apricots, pears? Also avoid bananas, dairy products, potatoes, carrots, that are known to make the poop more solid.

For a period I had to add prune puree to everything my 8 month old son ate, to mitigate his constipation. It just seem to take a bit longer for some babies to adapt to solid foods and usually it is more difficult for breastfed babies than formula-fed.

If you want to give her meat, then start very slowly. She is still young and you breastfeed, so she is likely to get the nutrition she needs anyway.

I hope this helps a bit,

Paula
