Guide To The Cutting Tools You Really Need

scrapbooking scissors
Are scrapbooking scissors really necessary?

Well, ask any sales persons in a scrapbooking store and you'll get a certain 'yes'! And to some degree they are correct. You obviously need to be able to cut papers and photos and get straight, not rugged edges and corners.

If you are just starting with scrapbooking and not sure that it is really your thing, then don't buy anything too expensive! Over time, as your interest and skills grow you can invest in some more advanced equipment.

Below you'll find a short description of the most common cutting tools used or scrapbooking. If you want to see what they look like and read customer reviews, browse our scrapbooking store. Scissors, edge cutters, knives etc are available in the "Tools section".

Ok, so here we go:

Scrapbooking Scissors Guide

Scissors

As I said, more than anything, a good pair of scissors is your minimum for starting scrapbooking. Get yourself a few high quality scissors that are made especially for paper. The Scotch Precision Scissor is one high-quality example. of a high quality pair of scissors.

Trimmers

In my view, the next tool to consider buying is a trimmer. With a good trimmer, you you'll get really straight lines that just aren't possible to achieve with a pair of scissors. They are usually very easy to use. A bit more expensive than scissors for sure, but I'd say worth it if you can dig out the money somewhere. The Guillotine Paper Trimmer is a really good one.

Edgers

Edgers are not necessary, but fun. And inexpensive!

What you use them for is to cut edges that are a pattern rather than a straight line. Again, not necessary, but sure add some spice to your scrapbooking. A good is Fiskars Paper Edger Scissors.

Circle cutters

Circle cutters basically cut perfect circles. Not very necessary, but probably will help you make nicer looking circles than using a pair of scissors.

To be honest, I've never used a circle cutter that I really can recommend. But Fiskars probably has a good one, although I haven't tried it myself. Search our scrapbooking store for customer reviews and recommendations.

Cutting machines

Well, now we're getting advanced. No need for a true beginner to invest in a cutting machine, but if you really enjoy scrapbooking, it might be worth spending your money one. Cutting machines can often be used to cut all sorts of shapes, something you just won't be able to do with a pair of scissors.

If you do consider a cutting machine, check out the Sizzix Big Shot Cutting-and-Embossing Roller-Style Machine. (Loong name!!) It is probably half the price of many other cutting machines and a really great product.

Ok, so this was our guide in the scrapbooking scissors jungle. I hope it helped you making some informed choices!

Now, what's the next step?
