Potty Time? ....Again?!

by Xavier
(United States )

How many times does a healthy 7 week old baby urinate? My wife and I are constantly changing our wee one's diaper.

His stools are healthy, and he seems to be cruising right along weight wise, and is getting tall, just like his Dad.

I just feel that it may be abnormal for him to pee 10-13+ times a day. Please help! He has regular doctor check-up's, etc.

I want to make sure that I'm not jumping off the deep end before I concern my doctor about it.

Thanks to any and all that offer their opinion.

Normal!
by: Baby Help Line

Hi Xavier!

Congratulations to your son!

Tall as he may be, he still has a very tiny bladder and absolutely no control over it.

Don't worry about his frequent peeing. If he is growing, and doesn't seem to be sick or in pain in anyway, he is very likely to be just fine.

A young baby should produce at least 6 to 8 heavy (wet) diapers per day, and most babies don't produce one heavy diaper just by peeing one time. So peeing between 10 and 16 times per day is probably completely normal. (Just maths... ;-)

However, one condition that can result in frequent urination is a urinary tract infection. This is more common in girls, but boys do get it too.

In addition to very frequent and often painful urination, other symptoms for infants are fever, looking sick, tummy pain, being irritable and loosing weight. A foul odor of the urine is another sign.

If you truly think his peeing is abnormal or if it has become much more frequent recently, ask the doctor to check for bacteria in the urine.

Hope this helps,

Paula

Since solid foods contain less liquid, I would say yes, it is natural for a baby to pee less after the introduction of solid foods; at least when the solids start being full meals so that the baby gets less breast milk or formula. It is important to offer water, breast milk or formula to complement the solid foods.

If your baby drinks liquid also and seems happy and alert (and does pee) and the pee is light and not smelly, there is no reason to worry at all.

But if you suspect that your son might be ill, do contact a doctor.

Hope this helps,

Paula
