One Year Old And Spit Up After Milk

by Jen
(Chicago)

My baby is 13 months old. Since I have changed from formula to milk he has been spitting up quite frequently, almost daily. Sometimes it is just liquid and others time it is chunks. He burps before it comes up. Every time he burps I checking to see if he spit up as well. Could this be reflux? I talked to the doctor and she said it may be post nasal drip and to give him Donatusin to help. Well it does not seem to be working. I have changed his feeding schedule. I am giving him less food more frequently throughout the day. The spit up is awful. Sometimes its hard for me to clean up without gagging.

Intolerance
by: Paula (Baby Help Line)

Hi Jen,

Since your son started spitting up just recently I don't think it is reflux. Babies usually have that right from the start and actually grow out of it around their first birthday if not earlier.

Since the spitting up started after you changed his diet, have you considered it to be an allergy or intolerance? He could have a milk allergy or lactose intolerance. If you think this might be a possibility, then take him off all dairy products for a few weeks and see if it helps. If it does, you can take him to a doctor and ask for a test.

If you don't think it is related to him starting with milk, other possibilities are a cold or stomach bug.

I really hope you get it solved and he will be better soon.

Warm wishes,

Paula

13 month old spit up
by: Leila

My son did the same thing once he started cows milk. We found that adjusting the amount of milk and how he consumed it helped. We went from 8oz bottles to 4-6 oz and that made a huge difference. He started drinking from a straw cup. We also made sure he ate solids before he got his milk (if not with his meal than shortly after his meal) which helped keep things down.

Milk is for Cows
by: Proud Dad

Looking from the outside in, it is obvious you shouldn't feed your baby cows milk. Formula is BAD, cows milk is BAD.
Cow's milk is for calves. After it's pasteurized twice at 140 degrees
there is absolutely no nutrition left anyway.
Prepare yourself for a sick child with allergies etc.
Breast milk were perfectly created with antibodies etc. etc.
If you can't breast feed, find a healthy mother selling her breast milk, worth the investment to avoid a big sick bill in the future.
Change your doctor too, she is incompetent, so typical, suggesting MEDICINE instead of the obvious cow's milk problem.
Grrrr some doctors make my blood boil

Frustrated Mom
by: Anonymous

My 1 year old has been spitting up more frequently too after switching to cows milk. She did have reflux when she was younger but it got better. Now I think it's back. It's very frustrating.

P.S. To Proud Dad- I don't agree with you! You don't know a thing about feeding a toddler. Anyone would tell you that you should be switching a one year old to cows milk. It's not always good for a toddler going on two years old to still be nursing either.

Confused Mom
by: Anonymous

My son has the same problem...just like Frustrasted Mom. I don't know what to do... He has done fine on formula for the last 6 months, but now switching to cow's milk he refluxes little curds right after drinking. This is my third child and no food allergies with the other kiddos or with me or my husband. Confused? Any thoughts?

Problems with beastfeeding at two year old...
by: Anonymous

The only problem with breastfeeding a two year old is judgmental individuals such as the dad who posted on here. My daughter will breastfeed until she decides she doesn't need the comfort or nutrition. The World Health Organization, the expert on this says. The mother and child should continue breastfeeding as long as it is mutaully enjoyed by both. Most kids selectively wean at two or three Wich is mother natures divine plan.

Extended breastfeeding
by: Paula (Baby Help Line)

Hi,

There are absolutely no drawbacks for a toddler's health to continue breastfeeding. Extended breastfeeding, as it is called in our western culture, is the norm in many other cultures. I recently wrote an article explaining the benefits of extended breastfeeding, for anyone curious on the topic.

Warm wishes,

Paula
