No Poo For Newborn
by Dasha
My baby is only one week old but hasn't had a bowel movement since Wednesday and today is Saturday. So it has been three days since she pooped. Should I be worried?

Does she seem uncomfortable? Is she eating well, peeing and gaining in weight? In addition to her overall well-being, another thing to consider is if she is breastfed or formula fed. If you do breastfeed, has your baby started to pass the typical yellow breast milk poo? This usually starts coming a day or two after mom's milk production has startedt o increase, so maybe at around day 4 or 5. If you breastfeed, your baby has started to poop and does produce heavy diapers (i.e. pees a lot) you probably don't have to worry. However, this young babies usually pass stools several times per day and you might want to check with your baby's health care provider what he or she thinks about the situation. The fact that your baby isn't pooping could mean that she isn't eating enough and may need a little help with the latching on and suckling technique, for example. If your baby is formula fed, he/she might be constipated, although it is not necessarily so. Your baby is still so young that she really isn't eatin gvery much yet, and hence could go a few days without pooping. You'll find symptoms and remedies here. If your baby has not yet passed ordinary stools (not the dark meconium), this is another reason to discuss it with the health care provider. Not because it has to be due to something serious, but newborn babies are... well newborn and sensitive. Always better to call one time too many. You might also find the following threads relevant:
