No More Poop

by Anonymous

I have a 10 week old son that only poops once every 3 or 4 days!!

I am breast-feeding but I know that's still not normal. His doctor told me that I shouldn't be worried since its not hard or painful to him. Am i over-reacting?

Baby Help Line Response:

Hi Mom!

I understand your worrying and I think you did the completely right thing to talk to your baby's doctor.

However, when a baby is around 8 weeks old, his digestive system has matured enough to reduced the number of poops to 1 time per day on average. Since you are breastfeeding and your baby is in no pain (and is peeing and eating as usual?) you really don't have to worry.

Breastfed babies almost "can't" become constipated.

At around 3 months old, two of my kids had periods of up to 14 days with no poop! No pain, no illness, they just made use of all the breast milk they consumed.

So don't worry, the poop will come!

If you want some more detail on signs of constipation, check out this answer to another worried mom.

Good luck! And what beautiful son you have!

Jack just won't let go...
by: Anonymous

I have a similar problem but I wouldn't find where to post my own.
I have a 5 almost 6 month old baby boy who is strictly breast fed.
For about two weeks now he has started "holding" his poops in.. seriously. Right as he is about to poo he goes straight as a board and WON'T let go. I know at some point they gain the control and start doing this but I didn't think that it was this early. I let him go 4 days before giving him Karo. Didn't help so I ended up giving him a "baby enema". Even then he held it off for a while.
Will he outgrow this??? This is my second baby boy and my first NEVER held his poop... well until potty training. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lucy
