No Bowel Movement For 9 Days Old

My 9 day old baby hasn't pooped in a day and half. We are feeding him formula and breast milk. He has had more breast milk than formula in the past day. He has been passing gas and peeing a lot. he looks like he needs to poop and tries but there hasn't been anything. Is this normal?

Hi!

Congratulation to your little son!

Since he is so young, the most common situation would be that he would poop several times per day. At least for a breastfed baby. Formula fed babies poop less often and are more prone to become constipated.

The best thing you can do is to try to increase the share of breast milk you give him, if possible.

Some solutions that helped me

Congrats on your new baby. I had a similar situation with my son because he couldnt digest the formula. We went through 4 difrent kinds until we found one that worked. But up until we did we would put a few drops up to a teaspoon of apple juice in his bottles. The doc said it was ok and it worked. Also if you want immediate result usually this works. Take a rectal thermometer with vaseline on it and insert for a few seconds. Thats usually gets things movin. Good luck!
