Night Waking

by Lisa
(Florida)

We (my 3 year old, my 9 month old, and myself) are on vacation for 2 weeks in Florida, staying in a two bedroom appartment with my parents.

My daughter (9 months) is sleeping in a pack and play in one of the bathrooms. Her naps have been fine but when I put her to sleep at night, she goes down for about 30 minutes then wakes up screaming. If I go to her she calms down but if I try to lay her down again she screams. I have tried EVERYTHING.

She just got her first 2 teeth. I thought she might have an ear infection so I got her checked out but she just has a sore throat.

I don't know what to do. I have gone to her, soothed her, given her suppositories, a bottle, motrin, tylanol, taken her out for a little, ignored her, turned on a night light, left the door open, given her toys, a blanket, more pacifiers, and nothing seems to help.

In my arms she is happy and fine but the minute i put her back she freaks. This has been going on for more then a week and I am loosing it. She doesn't fall asleep until midnight and then she sleeps til 9. What do I do????

Baby Help Line Response:

Hi Lisa!

Being 9 months old, I suspect she is scared. I'm sure you know separation anxiety can be quite a big thing in this age, and being put in a strange (in her mind) bed in a strange dark room far away from mom might just be too much.

Is there any chance at all you can co-sleep with her or at least put her bed in your room?

Maybe your parents can help you out with your 3 year old if she/he is comfortable with that if you need help at night to make it work out.

I hope this works out and that you have a great vacation!
