Naming his body parts!

by Nelsie
(Robesonia, PA)

My son was born at 24 weeks, weighing in at 1 lb 6 oz. He is autistic and had a lot of problems in his first year of life. In his first year, Eric had accomplished many milestones in his little tender life.

He was very slow at growing and so because of this, he hit most of his milestones at least 6 months later in life then most babies. He is truly my miracle baby. At 2 years old he was just beginning to walk and talk. At one year and a half he was prescribed glasses. His vision is really bad. But he remained the same happy baby.

I remember teaching him his first words. We would repeat them to him often, for he easily always would forget them. But one day he seemed to surprise us all. I began my usual "what's this called" as I pointed to his belly and he said "my belly". I then pointed to his mouth and said "and this what's this", he responds "my mouth". I pointed to his nose and said "what's this" and he said "my nose". When it came time to point to his eyes, I said "and what's this"(as I pointed to his glasses lens) he responds and says "my glasses". Well his grandparents, father, and my niece were in the living room with me. Everyone was laughing so hard. We couldn't stop. Here is my son, who is having difficulties in life, but the one thing he knew for sure was his glasses. Not his eyes, but the most important thing that he needed right now in his little life, his glasses.
