My Baby's Wind

by Sandra
(West Yorkshire)

My baby suffers really bad from trapped wind as well as reflux. We can wind him up to 2 hours at a time. He is in a lot of pain and discomfort.

Now he is making a gasping like noise at the back of his throat except he isn't gasping, which is also causing him to scream during and after feeding. I have been to doctors and hospital numerous times but just get sent home with no help and told its normal.

It really isn't fair for us to watch and it certainly is fair for my little boy.

Any suggestions what I can do? Thanks. He is 10 weeks old.

Hi Sandra!

I just answered your question in another thread:

Read it here.

But I must say I can't believe you are being sent home over and over again! Have you tried to capture your son's behavior on film? If the doctors don't take you seriously, that might do the trick.

Read the two threads below too where parents have similar (though not identical) problems and how they (some of them) finally got help. Sometimes you really need to see a specialist to get the right attention.

Don't give up! If you say the situation is bad and not normal, then it isn't normal. Parents know their children best!

I really wish you good luck! Please let me know how things proceed.

Hi Sandra
I know its very late posting this but have just read it and know exactly how you feel, my first baby had reflux and cried for the first three months non stop he never really vomited so they told me it would go away and was not that severe, but I could not cope anymore so brought him to casualty one day and said I wouldnt leave until they looked at him.

In the end we had a barium meal and they saw how bad his reflux was and put him on Losac the adult ulser tablet straight away. Within two days he was drinking full bottles and in no pain, he is seven now and can still suffer everynow and then if he eats the wrong food but one pill and he is fine again next day.

Hope you have come up with a solution already and dont need this advice.

Hi Sanra
My boy is 14 weeks old and you have just described exactly how he eats and the pain he suffers during feeding and after. We also have been to the doctor's and casualty several times only to be sent away, being told there's nothing wrong with him, even though its clear he has a problem.
We are using infracol, gripewater and infant gaviscon but they don't seem to help. Friends have suggested that it will go away once he's on solids, but we don't want to watch him suffer for that long.
We are going back to the doctor's next week to see if we can improve things.
I hope your son is doing better now.
