Easy Baby Life baby care

My Baby Wont Poo

by Pablo
(Tijuana, Mexico)

Hi, my baby is 6 weeks old, he is a male, he has been breastfead.

Our pediatrician recently told us to give a iron supplement to our son, but since we had given the iron to our boy, he has been constipated.

We have lower the dosage, in fact we stopped giving iron to our boy, but he is still constipated, my question is what causes constipation and is it normal that he gets irritable and has a lot of stinky gases?

Hi Pablo!

I wouldn't be surprised if it is the iron that is still causing problems, at least if your son is still breastfed. If you give him formula, this may instead be the reason for his constipation - quite a common reason.

Being gassy is very common for young babies, breastfed or not, while constipation amost never happens with breast milk.

Make sure you discuss with your baby's doctor why you are supposed to give iron to your son and what may happen if you now stop the treatment.

Hope this helps!
