My 6 Week Old Daughters Bowel Movements

by Nikki
(Coventry)

My daughter is just 6 weeks old and when she needs a poo she really strains herself when trying to go and goes quiet red in the face.

Sometimes she doesn't go for 2/3 days at a time and screams whilst trying. I take her nappy off sometimes to try to help her go by doing bycicle movements with her legs as I was told that this can sometimes help but it very rarely does.

Is there anything else I can do as its quite upsetting to see her like this?

Formulafed?
by: Baby Help Line

Hi Nikki!

I understand that it is very stressful to see your daughter straining so much. Is she breastfed or formulafed? If breastfed, just bide your time and continue doing baby massage. It is normal for young infants to strain and it will pass.

If she is formula fed, however, she can be a bit constipated. You can then try switching to another formula, for example one that is hydrosalyte. Sometimes just another regular brand can make a huge difference.

You can also find a few more tips on how to treat constipation here as well as among many other questions answered here at the Baby Help Line. Just browse around...

Good luck!
