My 5 Months Old Won't Eat

by Joel
(Calgary)

My daughter is 5 months old and she hasn't eaten much today, but she seems really happy and playful. She may be teething or have a growth spurt, could those be any reasons why and should I be worried?

Baby Help Line Response:

Hi Joel!

If it is only for one day, I agree with you, you probably don't have to be worried if your baby is not eating much. She might be teething or maybe she is about to catch a cold or something.

It is important, though, to continue to offer her liquid, formula, breast milk or even some water, since young babies get dehydrated fast.

Keep an eye on her, to see any signs of illness, or dehydration, such as fever or that she becomes very passive. Contact her doctor if you become at all worried about her well-being.

I really hope your baby is her normal self again tomorrow!

You might want to consider the possibilities of allergies. It may be too early to tell but my son, at an older age, didn't gain any weight for a year. His doctor had him allergy tested and found he had several allergies.
