My 19 Month Old Toddler Boy Cries When He Urinates

Can a toddler have a UTI? My 19mnth old son cries when he urinates.

Baby Help Line Response:

Hi Carmen!

Even if it is not that common, especially for boys, toddlers can certainly have a urinary tract infection (UTI)

In addition to pain when peeing, other signs can be an urge to pee often, a foul odor and/or dark color of the urine, trouble sleeping, fever, and being irritable.

It can be quite tricky when it comes to babies and toddlers to know if they really have a UTI just analyzing their symptoms, since they can vary so much.

I definitely think you should take your son to a doctor.

Hope this helps!

Paula

Circumcision is the solution?
by: Krishna

Hi,

My baby boy is 19 months old. Last saturday he cried inconsolably when he pees and he was passing 2 to 3 drops of urine every 3 mins and was crying when it happens. We visited a doctor on the same day and the doctor suggested circumcision. As we couldn't see him crying with pain, we accepted to do and done. Is circumcision is the only solution for his problem? I don't know whether I did right or wrong to my son..

Not the only solution, but OK

Hi Krishna,

Since in a large part of the world, boys are very rarely circumcised, this operations is obviously not the only way to take away pain when urinating for little boys.

The research is actually conflicting as to if circumcision actually reduces the incidence of infections and urinary tract infections in young boys. Some subscribe to the health benefits of circumsision, while other research highlights the risk of injury, infections and so on.

One study of boys under the age of 3, indicated that is this age group circumcised boys were at larger risk of several infections. (You can read about the study here.)

On the other hand, the medical journal The Lancet recently published an article showing how circumcision could reduce transmission of HIV. (Read about it here)

In any case circumcision is not the one and only solution to your son's problem, unless he had specific problems that made the doctor's recommendation completely logical from a medical perspective. Be sure to ask if there is still time!

But if you have already carried through with the operation, make sure you ask the doctor how to care for his genitalia to avoid infections. You are in any case not likely to have caused harm to your son.

Hope this helps,

Paula
