Mucus in Poop

by Jemima Victor
(China)

Hello,

I am basically from India and am staying in China right now.

My 18-month-old son has since last week suddenly started passing abnormally large amount of poop which has lot of mucus in it.

Earlier, he used to pass once a day, but now the frequency has increased to 3 to 4 times a day.

I did give him some "baby cheese" after a gap of almost one month. I did not feed him anything new.

We checked his weight, and we were shocked to see that he has lost 500 grams in this one week.

He sometimes eats bits of paper. Can that be the case here, or is it something serious.

Please help me.

Jemima.

See a doctor

Hi Jemima!

Since your son has had this problem for a week now and even lost some weight, I think you should take him to a doctor. He could be having some stomach infection. I don't think a little bit of baby cheese or paper could be the reason.

One reason, though, that children of his age get this type of problems is if they get too much fibre in the foods, for example if you have started to give him whole grain products.

Many children have stomachs that can't really handle that to any major extent until they are 2 or even 3 years old.

So if you have changed his diet recently to include whole grain products, take those away. You should notice an improvement within a day or two.

Other than that, have your son checked up so that he is not sick.

Good luck,

Paula
