Lose Weight After Giving Birth

I have just given birth for 1 month and a half. Now I have gained a lot eight, so my tummy and most especially my thighs and hips are so big..

My waistline is 33 and my hips is 39.. before my waistline is 28 and my hips is 36..

I'm very eager to lose weight cause I am bothered so much with my body.. Aside from that, I can't wear my pants anymore.. Now I am taking dietary supplements for a faster way of losing weight.. I am not breastfeeding my baby.. Is it safe to use diet pills?

Weight gain after pregnancy
by: Baby Help Line - Annie

Hi,

Congratulations on the birth of your new baby!

It is very early days yet to be loosing the weight you gained during pregnancy. Your body has gone through huge changes and will take a while to recover. And you are unlikely to end up with a body like it was prior to pregnancy!

Unfortunately we are bombarded with images of movie stars and celebrities that get themselves back to model thinness within six weeks. These women have nannies, personal trainers, and work out 6 hours per day. It is totally unrealistic and extreme.

Your priority now is enjoying your baby and looking after yourself. Dietary supplements only work in the short term, they do not work for long term weight loss, and actually train your body into thinking you are in famine mode and to store fat.

The best thing you can be doing is eating sensibly, you need to nourish your body to help it recover from pregnancy and childbirth. You can keep up your exercise by taking the baby for a brisk walk daily and you are already getting weight training carrying a baby around!

In the meantime, celebrate your womanly curves! Becoming a mother is something to be proud of. It is important you feel good about yourself exactly as you are and not feel bad about your body, much of the weight gain will slowly burn itself off as you bounce back.

So throw away the dietary supplements and just enjoy yourself and your new baby.

All the best,
Annie Desantis

To mom w 7 month old...

Hi,

I totally understand your frustration, but remember that your baby is still young, and it wasn't that long ago that you were pregnant! You can try to slowly reduce weight while breastfeeding and also exercise to strengthen your stomach muscles.

Read more about losing weight while breastfeeding here.

And about exercising together with your baby here.

Warm wishes,

Paula

exercise will help
by: Meg

Don't panic. I'm not going to patronise you by saying "embrace your new body, it gave you a baby" because I remember my post pregnacy body and it sucked. I felt fat, wobbly and untoned. That is normal.

I breastfed my son until he was 18 months so had to eat healthily and not drink alcohol - I didn't diet. I went to postnatal exercise classes which used pilates to strengthen my core, went for lots of long walks with my baby, my mum and her dogs and when I was ready about 9 months after he was born I started jogging again.

Exercise is a positive step whereas I always feel dieting is a negative step. Many gyms and leisure centres have creche facilities and you can do an internet search for local mother and baby exercise classes. You've had a baby VERY recently so it is normal to be bigger as your muscles still need to sort themselves out.

I know it's not what you want to hear but 9 months on and 9 months off is pretty sensible - you took 9 months to get to your full pregnancy size, give your body that long to get back to normal.
