Liquid Bowel Movements Seven Month Old Boy

by Heather
(Nanaimo, BC)

For the past day and a half my baby has not had a solid bowel movement, it has been completely liquid and very smelly. Is this normal for his age due to the fact that we are introducing solids?

Baby Help Line Response:

Hi Heather!

Actually no; runny, smelly stools doesn't seem normal to me. It could be due to some sort of gastric catarrh or due to his diet.

Think through what you have given him to eat in the past few days and see if there is something that could have caused his liquid stools. For example, babies that get too much fiber, through whole grain bread or some other foods can get really liquid stools.

In such case, if you take the fibers away, his stools should become normal within days.

While your baby has diarrhea, make sure he gets enough liquid and consider switching to a lactose free formula if you are not breastfeeding. Lactose can make the diarrhea reamin longer. Once the stools are back to normal, you can switch back.

Also keep an eye on that he pees regularly (i.e. wet diapers). Of course with any fever, vomiting or other sighns of him beign really sick, call a doctor to discuss how to handle it.

Good luck!
