Is It Immunisation Or Teething?

by Jodi Moore
(Central Coast)

My baby had his immunisation shots 1.5 weeks ago and now he is not sleeping through the night any more.

Since he was born he slept from 9pm till 3am, then a quick feed straight back to sleep then wakes around 630... until now! He had his immunisation at 11 weeks, he was a little late, he is now 12 and half weeks and his sleep during the night has been unsettled since his needles... Somtimes waking at 1.30am or at 4 after his 3am feed very unsettled.

I can feed him and he will settle a lot quicker, but is this what I should be doing? Because I don't believe he's waking for a feed. I also feel if i start feeding just to settle him then he will start to rely on night time feeds...

Is he beginning to teeth or could the needles have put him out of routine??

Maybe Immunisation
by: Baby Help Line

Hi Jodi!
Great that your son has slept so well during his first few months! And of course tough that his routines have now changed.

While he might be teething, it is not so common for babies to do that this early. Instead, it could very well be is immunisation or just him growing.

Most babies have periods when they wake up - until the age of several years. It can be teething, illness, nightmares, separation anxiety and other reasons. But good sleepers usually do this less, and it is easier and faster to get them back to their original routines. I suspect your son is one of those kids!

I agree with you that if you strongly feel that he is not hungry, it is great if you can put him back to sleep without feeding him. It is more likely then that he'll start sleeping through the night again soon in such case.

But if it becomes too tiring, I suspect even a short feeding will be ok for you son and he will still get back into his habits rather quickly. Or ask your spouse to put your son back to sleep at night every second time or so.

You can also try to feed him a little bit more in the evening and see if it helps.

Hope this gives you some help!

/Paula
