Irritable 7 Month Old

by Desperate Mother
(WI)

My daugther woke up Saturday with a fever, the told me to give her tylenol or motrin to break the fever. She slept and ate fine all day Saturday. Sunday she woke up very irritable, she didnt'want to eat and her fever was down. She was fussy, crying, screaming, didn't want to eat, sleep nothing all day Sunday. Monday she was fine, back to her normal happy baby. Tuesday she was back to the way she was on Sunday. She ate a total of 4 oz. all day.

I finally took her in because I was feeling too helpless letting her sit and scream and no being able to help. They checked her ears, throat, body, gums and temperature. They couldn't find anything wrong.

I also asked them if they thought it could be from a concern we've had for many months but they don't seem to be concerned...we thought maybe she was in pain because she's having troubles being able to have a bm. She Screams for a good 45 minutes every time she goes (at least once per day) and tenses her whole body up so you can't move her while she is having a BM. We asked if that could be from her being so irritable they said no.

I asked to have an x-ray or ultrasound or something done to make sure there was nothing being missed in the inside that we couldn't see or tell was wrong. They said they can't do one of them because it's really nothing. What could this possibly be?

They have ruled out gas pains, sore throat, ear infection, flu/cold, teething EVERYTHING! We are so lost on what to do with are irritable and non eating baby girl. Please help!!!!

Don't give up!

Hi Desparate Mom!

I feel so much for you and your daughter! Did they check her for urinary tract infection? Probably they did.

I can't telly what's wrong with your girl, but keep watching her, write down any symptoms and go to another doctor for a second opinion if she doesn't get better.

You should know, however, that when babies get ill, it may take them quite some time to get their appetite and normal selves back. One of my kids stopped eating for more or less two weeks after being ill when she was a baby.Every time. Very scary, but after a while I learned that that is how she is. No point in worrying. After those two weeks she often had a period with huge appetite, compensating for her previous loss of calories.

That said, you know your baby best, and if you think something is wrong, keep bugging the doctors!

Good luck!

/Paula

Irritable 7 month old
by: Anonymous

Our 7 month old has been very irritable in the afternoons for about three days. He has no fever and is eating. Maybe 7 months is just a time of transition and the baby is not sure how to handle it. Our baby also had a problem having a bm. He would make a terrible sound and get stiff also. We changed from rice cereal to oatmeal cereal with pears in it. Since then he is going to the bathroom normally. We sometimes give him apple juice instead, but pears seem to have the fiber he needs to help his bowels move without causing him such trama. I would continue to have the baby checked by the doctor. We are taking ours tomorrow. Trying the oatmeal and the pears and apple juice just might help. I hope so. Cynthia
