Infant Constipation With Formula

I am breastfeeding but I have been feeding him formula for the past 2 days and now I think he is constipated. What can I do to relieve him?

More breast milk
by: Baby Help Line

Hi Mom!

If possible, increase the share of breastmilk again until he poops in a normal way.

You should however know that depending on their age, formula fed babies tend to poop less often (if younger than 2 months) and sometimes more ofter (of older than 2 months) than breastfed babies. So unless your son is showing signs of constipation, don't worry too much.

Good luck!

/Paula

Babies with Constipation
by: Annette

My pediatrician told us to give our babies 1 teaspoon of dark Karo Syrup (you can get this at the grocery store) mixed with 4 oz of water. Just drop a teaspoon of the syrup in a bottel of water, your babies doesn't have to drink all 4 oz for it to work. First make sure that constipation is truely what is going on.

Constipation
by: Anonymous

Here are a couple of things my son's Dr. said to do. 1 teaspoon of sugar to the formula or 1/4 teaspoon of mylanta (guess it does the opposite for babies and is safe). If worse comes to worse they have little suppositories you can get at a drug store for little ones. Just put it in for a minute or two and take it out (don't leave it in like you would an older child). Normally the sugar should work.

constupation
by: Lindsey

my son has had trouble going on his own since about 2 months old. We tried the half juice/half water bottles, the tsp of KARO syrup in every other bottle and the suppositories, if you have hit rock bottom on finding a solution and must resort to suppositories be sure (if it is on a regular basis) that they are the glycerin kind i recommend pedia- lax its in a small tub the other kind are habit forming and your baby will begin to rely on you to make a bowel movement
