Ill 13 Month Old Baby Boy's Belly Button Just Popped Out

Hi my 2nd child, Oscar is now 13 months. for the last 5 days, a week after his MMR vacination, he has been ill with a terrible cough, very runny nose and mucus that he is obviously finding difficult to deal with and trying to unsuccessfully cough up. For two days he had a temperature that was successfully brought down with child paracetamol. For the last two days he has still been poorly, but cheerful - no temperature. Today he has been very sleepy all day, (no temperature), very bunged up, was sick after his dinner (perhaps because it was cheese based - silly Mummy), and just desperate to go to sleep. Then when I was changing his nappy I noticed his belly button had popped right out. Also he doesn't want his milk at night. Am I silly to just let this apparent cold bide its time since there is no fever, and what about the belly button - could this be a hernia, and is this normal to happen in a 13 month old?

Let a doctor take a look
by: Baby Help Line (Paula)

Hi,

First of all, you are not a silly but a very caring mom!

Since your son has been ill for a while now, I see no harm with taking him to a doctor. Most likely the doctor will confirm that he is on its way to get better and you can just wait it out. But I don't think one can be too careful with our little darlings.

Regarding the belly button, it could be a hernia, or maybe if he is skinny, due to his belly being a bit bloated - you mentioned that he threw up. But I would have that checked too by a doctor.

Warm wishes,

Paula

thanks and comment

Thanks Paula for your comments. We did, eventually manage to get an appointment with the Doctor - just a chest infection, so yet another dose of amoxacyln for the wee chap. as for the belly button - it had gone back in by the morning, and the doc confirmed there is nothing that they would do until he was two should it have not returned to its rightful place.
Hope this helps others.
Cheers Sam
