Hips and Sex

by Nina
(Michigan)

I had our son 4 months ago, and my husband complains about my hips not moving/ or shift the way they did before I got pregnant.

Seeing how your hips spread during the pregnancy I figured this was normal, and with a little time it would go back. But he's so frustrated and I feel so bad.

Is this at all normal for my body to do this or should I go see the doctor for it?

Inflexible hips
by: Paula (Baby Help Line)

Hi Nina,

I am not completely sure what the problem is here - is it the lovemaking that is suffering according to your husband? What is your view?

For a woman to become somewhat less flexible after carrying a baby inside for 9 months and then giving birth is probably very normal. And unless your hips have be injured, you should be able to get your flexibility back by exercising and yoga, for example.

If you feel as if something hsa been hurt, please discuss it with a doctor.

But really, your body is still healing and you are probably also in the process of adapting to life as a new mom. Having your husband expressing frustration over your body seems a bit unfair to me. Unless you agree with him and you are worried that something is seriously wrong, ask him to kindly back off and let you get yourself back in shape first.

A mom's body usually gets a lot of the pre-pregnancy appearance back after a while, but not all. That might be hard to swallow, but life is all about adaption - for husbands too ;-)

Warm wishes,

Paula
