Help - Baby Sick

by Jodie

My 4 month old is usually a happy baby but he hasn't stopped crying all day. I don't think he has a fever but he has diarrhea and isn't really interested in his bottle.

Should I worry?

Watch for signs of dehydration
by: Baby Help Line

Hi Jodie!

Since your son is so young - yes you should worry. I don't mean to scare you at all, but small babies can get dehydrated quite easily. So continue to offer the bottle or even just some water on a spoon. If you notice signs of dehydration, call a doctor. Signs of dehydration is that he is not peeing and that he is getting very tired and with low energy.

I once waited too long with contacting a doctor when my baby was like that and I ended up having to spoon feed her an oral rehydration solution made for infants. (can be found in pharmacies) every five minutes around the clock! Very, very exhausting, but necessary.

So try to fill your baby up with liquid as much as possible, even if it is just a tea spoon at the time. And don't hesitate to talk to a doctor if the condition continues.

Good luck!

Been there

You are all ways a little worried when you kids get sick. It's more of a concern when their so young. Watch for dehydration, if his mouth starts to dry out. A good way to check is gently pinch the back of his hand. If the skin stays pinched he is dehydrated, if it goes back to smooth flat surface he is ok, but check often as long as he is sick. What your checking is called turgor. It's the fluid recovery in the tissue.

I usually give the sickness one day to go away before I head to the docs office. Especially if its just one symptom. If its combined with fever, vomiting, and anything else I would make arrangements go in. I found with four kids some things go away on their own. If you have given him anything new to play with or eat he may just be reacting to that.
