He Hasn't Pooped In Two Days!

by CALVIN

Hi,
I'm a father of a newborn baby boy, my first child, and my son is about a week old.

I'm in the military and currently in Afghanistan serving my country and yes, I missed my first childbirth because I was here in Afghanistan and wasn't able to go home due to missions.

Recently I've spoke to my wife and she told me that our son hasn't poop in two days.

My wife told me that she was breastfeeding him for about a few days then he wasn't latching on.

So my wife decided to feed him formula and just recently she tried breastfeeding again and finally he latched on and since then there were no problem breastfeeding him.

However now he hasn't poop for two days and I'm so worried about what's going on and stressed out.

By any chance you know what is the cause of why he hasn't poop in two days?

A Little Constipated
by: Baby Help Line

Hi Calvin,

Congratulations to your little son! It must be hard to be so far away from home, your wife and your first born baby! I really hope you get to see them soon!

About your son, the reason he hasn't pooped is most likely the formula. Do you know if he had started to poop "breast milk poop" before the latching problem started? Breast milk poop is the typical yellowish, seedy poop that breastfed babies have.

If he had started with that, then the formula probably has made him a bit constipated. Formula often creates such problems, while breastmilk never does.

It is great that your wife tried breastfeeding again and managed to make it work! Breastmilk is a very effective remedy for constipation, and most likely your son's bowel movements will go back to normal within a day or two.

However, if he hasn't had real bowel movements since the black meconium, I think your wife should consult a doctor. It could indicate that your son isn't eating enough.

But again, if your son has already starting to poop real poop (not meconium), you don't have to be too worried. The poop will return!

If your son starts to seem uncomfortable from the constipation, post back and I'll help you some more. Or ask her to visit the baby's health care provider for some tips. If not, just tell your wife to breastfeed him frequently and everything will be fine.

Hope this helps, and again, congratulations to your son!
