Risks associated with passive smoking
by: Baby Help Line

I understand that you are worried, since passive smoking is wellknown to be dangerous for infants as well as for all people.

However, being fussy or crying is not a sign of harm from passive smoking.

There certainly are real potential dangers, such as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) , meningitis, allergy and more. The risk of SIDS is doubled for infants whose mom is smoking!

Here is an article about the risk of meningitis for infants exposed to passive smoking. (Opens in new window)

Although passive smoking should certainly not be taken lightly, if your granddaughter is only there visiting, rather than living in the house, the risks of harm are much lower, and especially if your daughter isn't smoking! (Learn about the risks of smoking when breastfeeding here.)

What your daughter can do to eliminate the risks and still see her boyfriend in his house, is to ask that anyone smoking either steps outside or at least stands in an open window in another room.

Giving feedback or advice to a new mom is a delicate task and even more so if you happen to be the mom to the new mom ;-)

It is very easy to feel disparaged and worthless and hence to just get hurt and mad when criticized in the beginning no matter how reasonable the comments are. So if you want your daughter to listen to you, go easy on her...

And again, her being fussy is not likely to be any sign of alarm unless she is showing other signs of illness too.

I hope this helps you,

Good luck,

Paula
