Fussiness At 12 weeks Old With Sour Breath

by Joanna
(California)

My daughter has always had a hard time with gas and seems to have reflux but rarely cries. But within the past week and a half she gets really fussy and cries on and off for an hour or two at night.

She will stiffen her legs, has sour smelling breath and irregular bowel movements.

It doesn't happen every night so I don't think it is something I am eating because I stick with the same things pretty much every day. What could it be?

Fussy baby with bad breath

Hi Joanna,

It is always hard as a parent when our little one is uncomfortable.

There are several issues you raise, which could be separate, rather than one thing. I don't think there is anything of major concern, but checking her out with your clinic or doctor may clarify things for you.

Firstly, the sour breath may be thrush. Many babies get thrush in their mouth, check if she has a white spots or a furry tongue or spots inside her cheeks. Thrush transmits back and forth to you via breast feeding so you both need to be treated. You can use gentian violet or get something prescribed.

Secondly, does she actually have reflux, or just looses a bit of milk after a burp? Again, explain all the symptoms to your clinic or doctor so you know what you are dealing with.

Regarding her bowel movements, breastfed babies can go days without a bowel movement as they use all the nutrients in your milk, so this is not something to worry about.

Her night time crying could be discomfort from wind, thrush, or she may be hungry. Babies change their routines when they are having a growth spurt and she may be going through a hungry phase. She may have a headache, and when laying down it starts throbbing. Many parents find osteopathic treatment wonderful for fussy, uncomfortable babies - it can help all sorts of issues. My little grand-daughter settled much better after several treatments.

Best of luck with your lovely little girl,
Annie Desantis
