Frequent Baby Poo

by Roeshdia Raran

Hio, My baby is 3 months old and is breastfed exclusively.

She always use to pass stool once a week only and apparently that was o.k so it didn't bother me much, but now for the past week she's been passing stool at least 3 times a day.

It's yellowish greenish in color, the same texture as her normal stools. She is not cranky or anything, but I'm just worried !

Hope you'll be able to assist me !

Normal, probably

Hi Roeshdia!

It is very convenient when a baby has bowel movements once per week, don't you think!? And with breastfed babies, that is completely normal. However, such a situation usually only occurs for a period of time.

Passing stools a few times per day is also completely normal. At around 3 months, babies' growth actually starts to slow down. It is quite possible that your baby has been growing so fast for a while that she has simply made use of all the milk she has consumed and that this is changing now.

I don't think you have to worry at all.

The color of the poo also seems normal to me. It can vary from yellow to greenish to brownish-yellow without anything being wrong.

Very green poop could be a sign either of a cold or af her not getting enough of the fat hind milk (the last milk being extracted from each breast while nursing). If you think that could be the case, try feeding her for a longer time on one breast before switching.

But again, unless your daugher is uncomfortable and seems to be ill in some way, don't worry!

Frequent Baby Poo
by: Kam

My baby boy is 11 weeks old and a week ago was pooping every 2 hours and was hungry almost all the time. Prior to this he was pooping 2 times a day. I called his Doctor who recommended an electrolyte supplement of which he has been taking for the past week. His poop had mucus in it for a while which have eased out. His bowel movements have slowed down to every 3-4 hours/day, which is substantially more frequent that the initial 2 times/day. Is this normal for a 11 week old or is it something for me to be concerned about.
