Fighting Sleep During The Day

My 19 week old boy sleeps all night and goes to sleep himself, but during the day he really fights it. The morning naps are fine but sometimes the afternoon and tea time naps he really fights. He usually goes to sleep with a cuddle. What could I try for him to go to sleep himself like he does at night and in morning?

Baby needing Mom to sleep
by: Baby Help Line - Annie

Hi,

To be honest with you, you are lucky he is going off to sleep by himself at those other times! I wouldn't even bother trying to make him do it by himself if he needs cuddling off to sleep. He is still very young, and babies need lots and lots of body contact.

I know it is hard when you want to get on and do other things, particularly at tea time. Maybe you can try a baby sling, that way he gets his closeness and can doze off and you can still get dinner ready.

A day for a baby is filled with all kinds of stimulation, think about it, so much of their life is new! Mom is the constant loving presence, and to some extent Dad. But you are his rock and the more tired he gets, probably the more he needs the comfort of you to relax enough to go
to sleep.

He will grow out of it, everything is just a stage and it changes all the time. Babies need lots of attention and closeness, and he will sure
let you know if he is not happy! Just go with what he needs as much as you can and he will settle quicker. The more you try to impose
what you need on him, the more unsettled he will get.

The developmental stage he is at, is all about learning the world is safe to explore as he learns to control his body. And Mom and Dad
create that emotional safety and reassurance for baby to bounce off from.

Hang in there, he will get more independent as he grows up. Still very early days yet!

EnJOY your lovely wee boy,

All the best,

Annie Desantis
