Fetal Gender Determination - How Certain?

by Sally Baker
(Goulburn, NSW)

This is my first pregnancy, and I had an ultrasound last week when i was 18wks and the lady said that she was certain it was a girl. I asked the doctor if the gender of the baby will change and she said that it shouldn't. What i want to know is, will the gender change or do I have to wait longer to find out the gender?

Very certain

Hi Sally,

Congratulations on your pregnancy and baby-(girl)-to-be! Since the ultrasound was carried out in week 18 of your pregnancy, it is highly likely to be accurate. Several studies, where pregnant moms have volunteered to participate, show gender prediction accuracy of over 90% after 14 - 16 weeks of pregnancy and approaching 100% at 20 weeks of pregnancy.

However, it all depends on the skills of the sonologist and how good the view was during this particular scan. Some times the baby's position can make a prediction uncertain or impossible. But if your sonologist told you she was certain, then you are very likely to be carrying a little baby girl in your womb.

Hope this helps,

Paula
