Crying Granddaughter

by Mary
(mississippi)

My 2 year old grand daughter scream and cry every time I try to take her home to her mother. She will be singing in the car until she see her street, then that when she try to jump out her car seat and run to the other side of the car.

Grand-daughter not wanting to go home
by: Baby Help Line - Annie

Hi Mary,

Your Grand daughter is lucky to have so much fun with you. I have no idea why she would cry when she returns home. It maybe that she is very bonded to you, and is recognizing her street as the indication that you will be going home without her. Have you talked with her Mom to see if she settles after a while once she is home?

Children often cry when leaving daycare and don't appear to want to go home, but it is usually that they are living in the moment and don't want to interrupt their fun times.

Unless you are concerned there are problems at home, I wouldn't make a big deal out of it, just make sure you are encouraging her to return home, and building the fun expectation of seeing Mommy, don't reinforce that she wants to stay with you. You can make up funny little songs about we're going to see Mommy today, hip hop hurray! Make it fun to go home and build a positive expectation for her to look forward to, rather than reinforcing the separation from you.

She is lucky to have so much love around her,
all the best,
Annie Desantis
