Cramping Baby Daughter

My daughter is ten months old and for the last four months or so she has been clinching her legs up, holding her breath, and eventually crying.

The doctor said it was her way of "getting attention" which I strongly disagree with. It seems to be getting worse. Could it be a symptom of a UTI? She does it constantly.

Thanks for your help!

Cramping Baby - second opinion
by: Baby Help Line - Annie

Hi,

It is always really hard to know what is going on with babies, when they can't tell us in words!
By UTI are you meaning Urinary Tract Infection? Does she only do this before peeing? It certainly wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion if you are not happy with your doctor. It is really important that you have a doctor that you trust and feels listens to your concerns.

Re getting attention, maybe, but sounds unlikely to me, and even if this is getting attention, that is not a bad thing. Of course babies need attention, and the more we give the better. And if a child is getting attention from being uncomfortable or unwell, then that is a pretty good indication that they NEED extra attention. Of course we don't want our children to only get attention from being unwell or uncomfortable, so lots of games and playtime and cuddles at other times are really important.

The other thing is, babies are learning to get control of their bodies, and they can do all sorts of things as they learn control, but this sounds like an ongoing thing, not just a stage for a few weeks, so I think, trust your instincts and get a second opinion.

All the best,
Annie Desantis

pains
by: Vass

My Baby did this all the time we thought she was having fits only to find out it was stomach pains but now shes 5 months she stopped doing it. She would shoot her eyes open and hold her breath for 5 seconds and turn almost purplish in color and then burst out in to a cry and sometimes vomit a small amount of milk.
