My baby is 8 weeks old and has not done a poo for 3 days, is there anything I can do to help? She is very uncomfortable.

Poor girl!

Hi there!

Unless your baby is breastfed, she may very well be constipated. You'll find both symptoms and remedies here. If your daughter does show signs of constipation, you can try a glycerine suppository for infants (found at the pharmacy) or simply try the remedies in the link above and wait it out.

If she is fully breastfed, do nothing (other than maybe some massage); not pooping for several days is normal for breastfed babies.

Good luck!

A great at home remedy
by: NannyNurse

Hello,
Here is a little something that works very well for constipated babies. Do you have any corn syrup or fructose (natural sugar from fruit) around the house? Take 3 teaspoons of that and warm it up with a little water and give it to your baby. Corn syrup is a natural and mild laxative. It will take some time but with in hour or so your baby should have a soft bowel movement. Also next time you are at the store look for chamomile tablets for infants they are very helpful for dissolving gas bubbles that hurt little tummies in both the upper digestive system and the lower.
Good Luck

constipation

Am a little concerned at the suggestions for sugary drinks to relieve constipation (I'm a midwife). They are old remedies that can cause tooth decay in babys teeth and are certainly not to be used. If your baby is breastfed then constipation is not an issue, it just means your baby is using all it is getting and there is no waste.
If using formula, make sure you are making up feeds correctly. In the UK we would advocate giving your baby some cooled boiled water as well as feeds if you are giving formula to help relieve constipation. I guess it gets pretty hot where you live so baby may need extra water. However as long as your baby is peeing well, do not worry too much if she does not poo that frequently. Baby massage may also help.
