Breastfeeding and Sleep

by Nicky
(Virignia)

My daughter is 14 weeks old and is used to falling asleep for naps and night sleep through breastfeeding. She will eat for a few minutes and slow down to a suckle and eventually fall asleep. This has been convenient for me up until now.

Is this okay to continue or should I find a new way to help her learn to go to sleep on her own? If so, how?

Baby Help Line Response

Hi Nicky!

It is very natural for babies to fall asleep through breastfeeding. Unless you want to, for some reason, you don't need to change that at all. Eventually, there will come a time when you may want or need your baby to learn how to fall asleep without being dependent on you.

If you do want to start teaching your baby how to fall asleep on her own or at least without nursing, check out our baby sleep tips. Here you'll find tips for teaching your baby to go asleep, stay asleep, wake up later in the morning, sleep in her crib and more.

My experience
by: Anonymous

My daughter is 8 months old and she has always done this. I started taking her off when she stopped actually drinking and cuddling, bouncing, patting to sleep.

She didn't like it at first and sometimes I think it is harder to do this way, but now dad can help and we are working towards her falling asleep on her own so hopefully it is worth it. Oh, and now she goes down much easier!
