by Lynette

I breastfed my baby for the 1st month. Now I give him both breast milk and formula, but now he seems constipated and not pooping, what's the problem?

More breastmilk if possible

Hi Lynette!

If there is a problem at all, it is the formula. Breastfed babies can't get constipated, but formula fed infants sometimes do.

So, depending on the share of formula, that might be the reason why your baby is not pooping. However, if you mainly breastfeed your son, it may also be that he is simply digesting almost everything of what you give him. Breastfed babies can go without pooping for many days without being constipated.

If you are worried, try increasing the share of breast milk for a while, and then increase his formula intake gradually again. You might also want to try a hydrosalyte formula for your baby, which is easier to digest.

You can find more signs of constipation and how to deal with it here.

Good luck!
