Bowel Movement Too Often

by jing
(germany)

My 10-week old son lately poops after each meal, particularly when he consumes about 110 mL of his milk formula. This is quite unusual for me since from the birth on, he poops not after each meal but mostly after two meals.

He's being breastfed and bottle-fed but mostly bottle feeding.

In the past few days, I noticed that he's eating a little bit less than before.

I would appreciate an immediate answer to my query.

Too Often
by: Amy

My kids will do that off and on. I would say that when he eats more it helps push more out since he has to make room to digest what he has just taken in. Also depending on how much breastmilk he eats can depend on how often he has a bowel movement. The more breastmilk the more often that can happen. It is not something I would worry about at all.

Try A Different Milk To Stop A Bowel Movement Too Often
by: Rebecca Jean

If your baby has a bowel movement after drinking bottle milk, he might have a reaction to the milk formula that he is drinking. Breast milk is better for your baby than bottle milk. Maybe you should breast feed more and stop giving him bottle formula. Also, you could try a different kind of milk such as soy milk or goat milk instead of cow milk. As long as the poop is not too soft like diarrhea I think your baby is alright. Sometimes it is normal for babies to poop several times a day, while other babies only poop one time a day. I think you should discuss this with your baby's doctor.

Your baby is probably perfectly healthy
by: Dr Sharif

Babies, have very new bowel systems. They haven't been overworked and abused like adults. Babies like birds, and fish, and other healthy animals generally bowel movement after every feeding. That is what all humans should be doing as well. Unfortunately, we tend to eat unhealthy foods and not enough raw foods to promote healthy intestines and colons. Unless the bowels are loose or watery, I would not worry. You have probably done a good job of creating a baby with a healthy excretory system. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your input Dr. Sharif, because I have the same concern and worries me too much. My 5weeks baby boy keeps on pooping also every after eating. He's on bottle feeding since I'm a working mom and it would be hard for me to keep the breast milk fresh when i resume for work. We went to his doctor last Friday and she said that there could be no problem since his bowel is normal but still our doctor advised as to change his milk to a lactose free, but just the same, he still poops every after eating. We even had a stool exam just to make sure that he's ok and the result was normal. I am planning to have a second opinion already to another doctor by Monday and fortunately read your comment. Thank you so much, it's really indeed a big help for me and my husband....

Help Please
by: Sheron

My now 17 month old son has a big bowel movement after every meal.... he was hospitalized for failure to thrive because he is not maintaining of the nutrients that food gives. He's not gaining weight no matter how much food you give him. Its becoming a big problem because the doctors think that I am not feeding him at all. What should I do

Second opinion
by: Paula (Baby Help Line)

Hi Sheron,

Have you been talking to several different pediatricians? If not, I think you should. If your son doesn't thrive despite eating well, he could have some allergy, intolerance, celiac disease or some other problem that needs to be addresses.

Some children become very skinny from being allergic to milk protein, for example.

Passing motion after every meal doesn't have to be a problem at all, but not growing and not gaining weight definitely is for a young child. And frequent diarrhea can lead to malabsorption of foods and need to be addressed by a doctor.

What if you feed him small portions and often? And make sure you feed him very nutritious foods like, a lot of veggies, fruit, meats, rice, potato, pasta, avocado, bananas and add butter, oil or gravy to his foods. Make sure you only feed him full fat dairy products (if he eats dairy).

Don't give him high fiber pasta, rice or bread, since that may make him poop even often and also ma make it more difficult for his intestines to absorb essential vitamins and minerals.

Also stay away from sugar. Give him nutritious foods instead of empty calories. Sweet foods may also reduce a child's appetite for the next meal, and cause tooth decay.

Another tip is to keep a diary of what he eats and bring that along to the doctor, so that you can discuss in a better way if there is anything you can adjust in his diet to help him.

I hope this helps a bit! I am not doctor and really encourage you to continue to seek further help. Please let me know what happens,

Paula
