Babies skin problem
by: Baby Help Line - Annie

Hi Kavitha,

Gowtham is just beautiful, what a special time it is when they are little! It does sound like your baby may have a bit of eczema - but I am not a doctor and can't see what it is. I would suggest you talk to the doctor again to get a proper diagnosis.

A baby's skin is very sensitive, and she may be allergic to something - either something you put on her skin or something she is eating. Ordinary soap is usually too harsh for a baby - you can get soap free natural cleaning products, or just use water. It may even be residue from washing powder in the cloth if she is really sensitive.

Are you breast feeding or bottle feeding? Some babies are allergic to formulas, or if you have introduced dairy products that could be contributing. Dairy products are very often the cause of allergies. My daughter was allergic to eggs - when my babies were small it was common to mix egg yolk into their baby veges. Wheat can also be a problem!

You can try withdrawing one food group to see if that makes a difference. But just be careful not to introduce anything new at the same time or you will not know the effect. If it is her formula you can get alternatives such as soy.

It is just a bit of trial and error though. If you can work our what is causing it that is better than just a treatment - then you can prevent it. But in the meantime, a visit to the doctor to get something to help her be more comfortable, and the doctor may have some ideas about the cause.

All the best,

Annie Desantis
