Baby Weight Loss

Sir,

I have a Baby girl that was 4kg at Birth and after 6 weeks, she was 5.5kg. Surprisingly, I took her to the clinic yesterday for her scheduled immunization exercise for 3 months old but I was surprised that she weighs 5.1kg.

Apart from this loss of weight, she looks absolute okay, no sickness and she looks fresher and lighter in complexion than when she was born. What could be wrong Doctor?

Baby weight concern
by: Baby Help Line - Annie

Hi Adetutu,

Firstly, the Baby Help line experts are not doctors, we are parents, and have some expertise in child development, so it is still important to take the advice from your clinic.

Regarding your baby girl, there is quite a big range in what is normal weight for babies. Your little one was a very good birth weight, and weighing 5.5kg at 6 weeks is considered at the top of the range. So loosing some weight still has her well in the middle of the range for her age, even at three months.

It may be she was weighed on different scales, may have just had a feed at the six week weigh, and the difference may not actually be so great.

Babies tend to have little growth spurts, where suddenly they are hungry all the time and seem to be growing daily, then they can plateau for a while. I am assuming you are breastfeeding, so make sure when you are feeding that she empties a breast before swapping to the other. The last of the milk is the creamiest and the richest. Some babies that just have small frequent suckles may not be getting this rich hind-milk. She should be having 5 - 6 full feeds per 24 hours, although of course, all babies are different.

Since your little girl is not ill and seems happy I would expect she is just in a plateau phase, and before you know it she will put on a growth spurt. Just keep an eye on her weight, and it might pay to get her weighed again in another two weeks, but she is still well within the normal range for her age.

All the best,
Annie Desantis
