Baby Wants To Eat All The Time

My 7 week old wants the bottle in her mouth all the time regardless of how full she is. If it was up to her she would keep drinking and drinking even if she is full. She usually is content with 6 ozs but wants the bottle back about 20 minutes later. We really think its a comfort thing. We have tried giving her a little water to satisfy her but I am not sure how much is safe to give her. We can entertain her for 15 minutes then its back to crying for the bottle. Do you think she will grow out of this soon? Any suggestions?? Help!!!!

Baby Help Line Response:

Hi Michelle!

To me it sounds like your daughter is acting just like a breastfed baby would do to naturally increase mom's supply of breast milk. 6 weeks is a growth period and many babies start needing more food at around tht time.

If breastfed, the baby cries for the breast again and again and afte some 24 to 48 hours, mom's supply has increased enough to satisfy the baby's increased needs. And a calmer starts (until the next growth period).

Try increasing teh amound of formula you give your baby. She might need it!

Of course it may also be a comfort thing. Have you considered offering her a pacifier (after feeding her a lot of formula)?

Good luck!
