Baby Sleep Walking

by lisa

My son is 16 months and has been sleep walking I'm scared he might get hurt since he's been hurt once. He gets up and starts playing with his toys then climbs up to bed. It is a constant problem dealing with him. During the day he naps for two hours but won't sleep walk.

I'm a heavy sleeper but lately I can't sleep, he tosses and turns until he climbs out of bed. Who knows what to do, help is this normal?

Safety at night
by: Baby Help Line (Christine)

Hi Lisa -

I wasn't sure from your question whether or not your baby is co-sleeping (in the bed with you) or is in his own bed. Either way, my personal feeling would be to put him in a more secure sleeping environment until he is older and less likely to get up and play in the night, or less likely to injure himself if he does so.

All of my little ones have been in a crib or crib bed until at least 24 months of age because of this very reason. I don't think I'd be able to sleep either, if I was worrying that one of them might be on the move at night without supervision! I've actually found my crib bed to be invaluable because it's big enough to accommodate a baby from infancy through to toddlerhood and the bars are high enough to prevent nocturnal wandering.

If this just isn't an option for you, then the best thing would be to ensure that the room is as baby-safe as it can be. The door should be closed (and you need to know that your baby cannot open it) to prevent accidents on stairs or to stop baby wandering into hazardous areas like the bathroom. There shouldn't be anything hazardous lying around in the room and electrical outlets should be covered. If he's sleeping in the room with you and is climbing in and out of your bed (which may be quite high) then perhaps put some cushions on the floor to provide a soft landing if he falls.

I do hope this helps.

Monitor NEW
by: Anonymous

This isn't going to help fix the cause of their sleepwalking but my wife and I purchased an Angelcare monitor and I'd highly recommend it for your situation. Designed to record babies' movements (even breathing) and sounds off an alarm if no movement was noted in a 20 second period. It works like a charm and has actually saved quite a few lives. You may not be worried about SIDS or suffocating at this age but as soon as they're out of their crib wandering you'll know within seconds. Good luck!
