Baby seems restless

by Zaida
(Jacksonville,fl)

I have a 3 month old baby girl. She is doing pretty good at night...still having two feedings since we are not sure about her weight or if she is ready for even longer hours.

But mostly in the early morning.. between 4 and 6 in the morning she starts whining and dropping her pacifier even if I have fed her not long ago. I keep putting her pacifier back in her mouth and she falls sleep again and do this over and over again for an hour or so until she finally falls sleep again or it's almost time to wake up. What can I do to try to stay asleep at least until 6 or 7 in the morning??

Gas?
by: Baby Help Line - Paula

Hi Zaida,

Congratulations to your daughter and to the fact that she is such a good sleeper. Being so young, she really is doing great.

What you describe about her being restless during those early morning hours is a very common thing and something I remember very well from my own children too. Actually two of hour three children had periods when they woke up to be wide awake at some point between 4 and 6 am - for an hour or so. Torture for an exhausted mom!

One thing I did notice with especially one of our children; she seemed to gather gas during the night. Then at around 4 am or so, she became uncomfortable and started to make noise and move around. If I then helped her to release gas by pressing her legs gently towards her tummy, she could then get back to sleep much easier and without making noise. Maybe worth trying?

I have also noticed that it is very important that the bedroom is completely dark also during those hours of dawn.

Another possibility you can try at this time, is to let your baby co-sleep with you and see if it helps.

I hope any of these tips will help you out. But also remember to have realistic expectations for your little daughter. Such young babies are not really designed for sleeping long periods and she is doing great already. But of course the tips are worth trying.
