Baby Poop

by Joanne
(Canada)

Is it healthy, normal for a baby 4 to 6 months old to poop after 4 to 7 days a week and to have lots of gas?

Baby Help Line Response:

Hi Joanne!

It depends on if your baby is breastfed or formula fed (or is getting solid foods). If your baby is mainly breastfed it is completely normal, at least the part about pooping rarely.

The gas is probably also completely normal, but could also be related to what you eat. Coffee, broccoli and cabbage for example can make your baby gassier. Find more information here.

If your baby is mainly formula fed, then pooping every 4 to 7 days could indicate constipation, but it also depends on what the poop is like when it comes out and if it is painful for your baby to pass stools. Find symptoms of constipation as well as remedies here.

Starting on solid foods can also create gas and tummy pain. Go slowly with the introduction if you notice that your baby seem to produce a lot of gas.

Wish you the best!
